The Netherlands - VAT Rate Increase Confirmed
18 September 2018 - Prince’s Day - saw Budget Day in the Netherlands and the release of the 2019 Tax Plan. This included the confirmation that the Dutch reduced VAT rate will be increased from the current 6% to 9% as from 1 January 2019.
It was also clarified that if a payment for a service was made in 2018 the 6% rate will apply. For example, a concert or season ticket bought in 2018 for an event occurring in 2019. The 9% rate will apply to payments made from 1 January 2019.
The reduced rate is levied on certain specific goods and services such as accommodation, certain food and beverages, water, agricultural products, medicines and aids, arts, collectibles and antiques, books and periodicals.
